I have been fortunate to have come to beautiful Shelter Island for my entire life. I ran the very first Shelter Island 10K, and have either run or walked most of them since then. It is an honor to participate this year on behalf of Joe Theinert who is remembered by most Islanders as a warm, terrific guy, and who, of course, is a hero. Please make a donation to the Theinert Ranch. It is such a worthy cause. No donation is too small or too big. And come cheer us on on June 17. (Look for me – I’ll be the one who is third or fourth from the last person, whose face will be turning multiple shades of blue and purple !!).
Strongpoint Theinert Ranch (STR) is a place where active and veteran service members, their families, and Gold Star families can come together to strengthen, transition, and reconnect on a 1,000-acre former cattle ranch in remote Magdalena, NM. STR is run by the family and friends of 1LT Joe Theinert who was killed in action during combat operations in Afghanistan on June 4, 2010. All guest expenses, including round-trip travel, meals, and equipment, are underwritten by the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund. We have hosted over 10 retreats and 80 guests so far including active and veteran service members from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps and Gold Star mothers and fathers. We are proud of what we have accomplished so far, but know that we can do more.
Currently, Strongpoint Theinert Ranch guests stay in Joe's family home, but we are committed to expanding our reach. We have set a goal to raise $300,000, which would allow us to build a “bunkhouse” on family donated land. The 2,600 square foot bunkhouse will have 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, a full kitchen, a great room, and give us the capacity to host up to 20 guests at a time. We have already raised $259,000. Please help us reach our goal and secure funding to break ground by December 2019. Learn more here.
