I first met the Theinert family when I was in college with both Joe and Jimbo at the State University of New York at Albany with them from 2005-2009. While living with Jimbo for the majority of my college years, I had the pleasure of forging a lasting bond with his brother Joe. We played flag football together, celebrated holidays like St. Patrick’s Day and New Years together, and traveled together on Spring Break. It was often the case that when we would be spending late nights out on the town, Joe would turn in early to prepare for various ROTC exercises. His dedication to service is something that I admire to this day.
When Joe was killed in Afghanistan it was a traumatic shock to our entire friend group, and it is a loss that we still struggle with. I have found it helpful to myself and others to continue the dedication to service that Joe maintained his entire life. In honor of Joe’s life, and our friendship, I have chosen to set the goal for myself of raising $10,000 to benefit veterans through therapeutic retreats at Strongpoint Theinert Ranch. While I will never be able to replace the loss of my friend Joe, I know that the work that the Theinert foundation is something that he would be proud of. So please join me in my objective to Remember Joe and help our nation’s veterans to Strengthen, Transition, and Reconnect.
Strongpoint Theinert Ranch (STR) is a place where active and veteran service members, their families, and Gold Star families can come together to strengthen, transition, and reconnect on a 1,000-acre former cattle ranch in remote Magdalena, NM. STR is run by the family and friends of 1LT Joe Theinert who was killed in action during combat operations in Afghanistan on June 4, 2010. All guest expenses, including round-trip travel, meals, and equipment, are underwritten by the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund. We have hosted over 10 retreats and 80 guests so far including active and veteran service members from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps and Gold Star mothers and fathers. We are proud of what we have accomplished so far, but know that we can do more.
Currently, Strongpoint Theinert Ranch guests stay in Joe's family home, but we are committed to expanding our reach. We have set a goal to raise $300,000, which would allow us to build a “bunkhouse” on family donated land. The 2,600 square foot bunkhouse will have 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, a full kitchen, a great room, and give us the capacity to host up to 20 guests at a time. We have already raised $259,000. Please help us reach our goal and secure funding to break ground by December 2019. Learn more here.
